I was surprised to read this article in the NYT, claiming the anachronistic death of blogs by the "soon to be adult" set.

My son has always loved games with numbers. As a three year old, he'd line up stuffed animals around his Monopoly board and play with them, running in to the living room every few minutes to ask how much 200 minus 140 was and so on. He learned to add and subtract three-digit math before kindergarten because I was pretty impatient having my Scrabble game interrupted, and began to ignore his inquiries.

As a writer, I was used to brick and mortar reference guides. My Oxford. My Style Guide. My Roget's. Especially my Roget's, because tired verbs, overused adjectives and cliched terms just looked like dried fly carcasses on my paper. Or screen. But, alas, my stock of reference books didn't always accompany me to the far reaches of the coffee shops, soccer game parking lots and business meetings where I holed up with my laptop and work. "You won't believe how cool this is," said Cynthia in one of her newsy emails. "I'm totally addicted!"

The last week has been a challenge for yours truly. Despite several virus protection programs something bad got into PC through the gates of Internet Explorer and a slow, insidious infection took hold. It was fascinating, actually. If I weren't so frustrated I would have marveled at the interloper's steady creep through my machine and the ensuing chaos it wrought.

LOVEFiLM, the Netflix of Europe, was acquired today by Amazon. Actually, it's one of those fuzzy back and forth deals. LOVEFiLM acquired Amazon's DVD rental business in 2008, and now Amazon is buying the remaining shares of LOVEFiLM. So be it.

I have a confession. For the past four years (which corresponds to the length of time I've known my husband), I've fallen deeper and deeper into the abyss of college football. And NBA basketball. And soccer. And, even, the NFL.
