It’s the most powerful Tweet of the year

Scrolling Twitter for takes on trending topics has become a new favorite pastime of mine, I’m loath to admit.  The “why” and “how” of Zeitgeists that blossom at 140 characters or less is fascinating, yet, I can’t help but feel guilty for being sucked in. My iPhone ADD has become as ubiquitous as the People magazines at doctor’s offices.

And yet, the cream does rise, and along with itch-scratchingly prosaic trends, some tweets stick out.  I was heartened to come across this “best of” list today, announcing the most powerful Tweets of 2010.

Top tweet goes to reporter Ann Curry for her convincing missive to the U.S. Airforce that cleared the way for a Doctors Without Borders plane to land in earthquake-ravaged Haiti in order to administer aid to victims there.

Other top tweets concerned rescue, a royal engagement, international diplomacy, the World Cup outcome, and even Conan OBrien’s road show announcement—which led to instantaneous sellouts. It may seem alarmingly reductive, but Twitter’s built-in concision demands have given the world a whole new way of experiencing “up to the minute” news, and, in some cases, these tiny word bullets have lasting and supersaturating impact.

Ah yes. Thank you Suzy! And don’t forget the first ever Golden Tweet, presented to Stephen Colbert last night by Biz Stone.
